and his 'Much obliged' for our lunchtime custom
of desperation.

Running a pub has always been a bit of a struggle. Maybe he was desperate for your lunchtime custom.

He did say we had no need to take the only table for two because Tuesdays was quiet, and it is off the beaten track, but the steak and ale pie was delicious
